The ancient craft of enamelling hasn’t changed much since it was first used around the time of the ancient Egyptians. Today many metals can be enamelled including copper, silver and gold. Copper is the cheaper of the metals and is a good starting base for the first time enameller.

Honeycomb Crafts run courses in Enamelling, for the beginner, at the Lichfield Studio. Students will learn this ancient art of fusing glass to metal to create beautiful jewellery or something to simply enhance other pieces of work.

Students will be taught how to clean the metal ready for enamelling and how to lay the enamel powder onto the metal ready for firing. Many techniques can be used once the enamel has reached the melting stage. Some of the techniques leave beautiful designs.

Scragfitto - scratching a design into the enamel powder over a piece of work already enamelled.

Swirling - just simply taking a pointed instrument and swirling a design into the molten enamel while the metal is still in the kiln.

Cloisonne - is the use of wire to create designs. The shape made is then fired onto the piece of metal. It can then be filled with enamel and fired again giving a beautiful effect.

All of these techniques will be taught during the course.
